The European Commission Representative Office for the West Bank and Gaza Strip us seeking proposals for the 2009 Food Security Thematic Programme in favour of the oPt. The global objective of this Call for Proposals is to improve income and access to food for the vulnerable rural population including smallholder farmers, in a social, economic and environmental sustainable way.
The specific objective of this Call for Proposals is to support the development of a more productive and sustainable agriculture that takes into account the scarcity of water in the area, through the promotion of the reuse of the treated effluents for agricultural purposes.
Below are the types of priority activities which may be supported under this call: When the treated effluent is available, the proposal will consist in an agricultural i) project to promote the reuse of the treated effluent for agricultural purposes. Awareness raising, agricultural and irrigation training, extension, monitoring, farmer’s organisation, introduction of infrastructure related to the irrigation, water saving techniques, will be among the main components of the projects. The quality of the treated effluent shall be in line with the existing standards to allow for, at least, the irrigation of fruit trees. Contribution from beneficiary farmers will be encouraged. When ii) the treated effluent is not available, the proposal will include both the construction of the sanitation infrastructure and the agricultural project (as described in point i))
Proposals consisting in extending the capacity of existing collection and treatment facilities will be considered only if a component for the promotion of the re-use of the treated effluent is included.
