New UN report highlights bleak economic situation for Palestinians

The economic situation in the occupied Palestinian territory has seen some improvement but remains precarious, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where the continued Israeli blockade undermines prospects for employment and growth, says a new United Nations report.
The International Labour Organization (ILO), in its annual publication on the situation of workers of the occupied Arab territories, attributes the improvement to an accelerated growth rate and a slightly higher rate of employment – roughly 15 per cent in both Gaza and the West Bank.

AHDAF Organization

General Information
History :

Ahdaf is a Palestinian nongovernmental organization that was established in Bethlehem, Palestine in the 14th of April 2009. Through observation and research, the founder of CR, Mrs. Laila Asfoura realized that there is a need for a change in our society to promote major values for a better life.

Mission:

Ahdaf's mission is to assist women through knowledge awareness and skills to enable them to face with more confidence the challenges of life, to raise the level of awareness of what is possible and to increase their self-confidence at the social and economic level.

Objectives:

• To organize, train and assist women to improve their economic position through the acquisition of skills in order that they may play a greater role in social life and in the development of their families and communities.
• To make people aware of their abilities and to provide training for women so that they can develop income-generating skills leading towards self-sufficiency.
• To develop at the individual and group level activities involving arts and crafts so that they may create new designs for their work. This will also require the marketing and selling of these items for the benefit of members.
• To acquire technical and financial assistance suitable for different industrial activities for the benefit of those involved in Care and Repair and the local communities.
• To enhance community participation in the development of income-generating activities to raise the standard of living for the participants and their families.

The Palestinian Conflict Resolution Center

General Information
History :

The Palestinian Conflict Resolution Center began operation in March of 1995. Known as "Wi'am", which in Arabic means ("cordial relationships") the Center helps to resolve disputes within the Palestinian community by complementing the traditional Arab form of mediation, called Sulha, with Western models of conflict resolution. When Wi'am opened its doors, a vacuum of authority existed in West Bank society. The authority of the Israeli military occupation had never been accepted, and there was no clear Palestinian authority outside Gaza and Jericho. Since many of the traditional village leaders (mukhtars) were appointed by the Israelis during the occupation, their legitimacy was no longer fully accepted by the community.

Although Palestinian autonomy is now extending into most major population centers in the West Bank, in reality 70% of the West Bank remains under Israeli military occupation. The Palestinian community has been severely weakened by thirty-two years of Israeli military occupation (since 1967), and the transition of power to the Palestinian National Authority is being implemented piecemeal, at best. One of the consequences of this situation is that there is no clear means of resolving disputes within the Palestinian community. It is in this context that the Wi'am Center continues its operation.

Mission:

As a grassroots organization established in Bethlehem in 1995, Wi’am (“Cordial Relationships” in Arabic) aims to improve the quality of relationships and promote peace and reconciliation in the community. It strives alongside other forces present in the community to build a society based on democratic norms and values.
