Heber Vega, a humanitarian worker and photographer, originally from Chile, but now based in northern Iraq has come out with some tips for NGOs as to how they can use their photographs for their own benefit. In a recent post on his website, he mentions about the significance of NGOs raising awareness about their causes through photographs. Pictures can play a tremendously important role for NGOs in raising awareness about a cause.

On the World Press Freedom Day, PCHR and OHCHR Organize Honoring Ceremony Entitled Outstanding Journalists

Yesterday evening, 3 May 2010, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) organized a ceremony entitled "Distinguished Journalists" to honor 25 journalists, who were granted international awards in 2009 and 2010 for their works. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of journalists, representatives of media institutions and civil society organizations and public figures.

Description of functions
 
 
Under the guidance and supervision of the Head of Office or his/her delegate, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of all activities related to OHCHR-oPt project for human rights promotion and protection. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for:
• Liaising with national and international media in all three relevant languages (Arabic, English, and Hebrew) to promote OHCHR-oPt activities and statements.
• Formulate a communication and public information OHCHR-OPT strategy for effective human rights promotion and outreach, with emphasis on violations in the OPT by whomever they occur.
• Creating and maintaining the OHCHR-OPT website. Ensuring that activities of the office work, including the office’s public reports, is presented to the media and wider public in an effective and timely manner.
• Assisting in drafting weekly, monthly and annual OHCHR.OPT reports, including the Office’s contribution
to other relevant UN reports.
• Drafting and disseminating material for publication, including press releases, opeds, and feature human rights stories and other relevant publications.
• Arranging press conferences, press briefings, and other Office activities as appropriate. Contributing to approaches towards radio and television programmes, new media and other advocacy channels.
• Within limits of delegated authority, represent the Office at meetings of the UN Country Team Communications
Group, the Humanitarian Country Team Advocacy Working Group, and other advocacy related bodies.
Contribute to the mainstreaming of human rights within the overall UN approach in OPT.
• Assisting in media coverage to visits by independent human rights experts and OHCHR missions, including media for such visits.
• Monitor the local and international relevant media from a human rights perspective, particularly in relationb to the OPT.
• Liaising with counterparts in other UN and civil society organisations.
• Integrating fully gender perspective into all its activities.
• Additional tasks as required.
